In the church calendar, we have lovely ways of marking this time of year with All Souls Day right after Halloween and then All Saints Day. We will celebrate that this Sunday during our worship together.
There is a line in scripture that talks about about all these saints...linking arms with us...listen to Hebrews 12:1:
since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us also lay aside every weight,
and sin which clings so closely,
and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us
I find it really encouraging to know that I am not alone, others have struggled and also had joys before me in their journey of life following the Holy One...
and I love to think of them all cheering me on to "take a load off" and let go of the things that trip me up. I am freed up to run "the race set before me", knowing of my true identity as a beloved of God. We are each one person in a long chain of hands linked together and holding out our hands for the saints to come.
I can't help but laugh at the absurdity of some of the past saints, the seediness of some of these witnesses...King David, Abraham, Tamar, Zaccheaus, the woman at the well. Clearly, it is not their perfection that identifies them as saints, but rather their connection to the Holy One. Whew. My real self is not barred from showing up, either before the Holy One, or at GSP. Neither is yours.
I find myself at the intersection of grace and truth daily.
